Swifties defend projecting Taylor Swift’s shirt onto Christ the Redeemer statue amid ‘blasphemy’ allegations
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL: Brazil welcomed pop star Taylor Swift in a unique and special way. Rio De Janeiro honored the singer by screening a “Welcome to Brasil” shirt inspired by Taylor Swift’s “Junior Jewels” shirt from her “You Belong With Me” music video about the iconic Christ the Redeemer.
Brazil’s Swifties were flooding the social media accounts of Padre Omar Raposo, rector of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer after Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes supported their demand.

Not everyone is happy with the projection on the Christ statue
In addition to being a cultural icon of Christ of Rio De Janeiro, the Redeemer statue symbolizes Christianity because it was built to express the divinity of Jesus Christ. Therefore, some people are furious with the projection welcoming Swift to Brazil.
Reactions on social media suggest that many see this as a lack of respect for the monument, with some even saying it was “blasphemy”.

Swifties defended the screening with an explanation
Brazil’s Swifties went crazy when authorities finally granted their wish. They don’t care about negative reactions.

A hardcore Swiftie has given a clear explanation on the issue of disrespect.
An X user from Brazil, @ursogorrrgeous, who calls herself Swiftie, wrote in defense of the event. “In Brazil, the use of projections is a recurring event. This can be seen in particular during important football events (which are very important) where the statue of Christ the Redeemer adorns a jersey. Brands use it. Personalities notables also use it.” She has also shared images of the ornate statue in various projections in the past.

“It is very remarkable that the orchestration of these screenings is entrusted to a clergyman and that the effort is exclusively dedicated to philanthropic and charitable causes,” she added. The user also asked people to do proper research before calling this disrespectful.
She also said: “We honor Taylor for finally coming here after a decade. Efforts are now being redirected towards providing assistance to those in need.
Many have supported this view. One user said: “This is not blasphemy, because the statue has been used in this way for years, the PRIEST who is in charge of the projection himself has given permission.”

One user commented on @ursogorrrgeous’ post in support of her: “Hi sweetie! Swiftie from Argentina here. You know your culture and if you’re respectful or not, no business in another country. You have to welcome it in the Brazilian way, which “It’s great. Enjoy, haters from other countries are going to hate. “
