Mike DeWine orders flags flown at half-staff for 3 days after Ohio I-70 bus crash kills 6

ETNA, OHIO: The horrific crash on Ohio Interstate 70, where a charter bus full of high school students was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer, left six people dead and 18 injured, the Associated Press.

Licking County Emergency Management Agency Director Sean Grady reportedly said five vehicles were involved in the crash. Among them was a Pioneer Trails charter bus carrying students and chaperones from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District in eastern Ohio.

Three passengers on the bus, which carried 54 travelers and a driver, were pronounced dead at the scene, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

The deceased were identified as juveniles, John W Mosely, 18, of Mineral City; Jeffery D Worrell, 18, of Bolivar; and Katelyn N Owens, 15, of Mineral City.

A group of three people traveling in one of the passenger vehicles involved were all pronounced dead at the scene, the highway patrol said.

They were identified as Dave Kennat, 56, of Navarre; Kristy Gaynor, 39, of Zoar; and Shannon Wigfield, 45, of Bolivar.

Ohio’s I-70 bus crash was like a chain reaction

The vehicles involved were traveling westbound on Interstate 70 in Licking County, about 26 miles east of Columbus, around 9 a.m. when the tragedy occurred.

According to the highway patrol, at least three vehicles then caught fire. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The scene was visited by a team of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board.

Marita Salkowski, American Red Cross regional communications director for central and southern Ohio, said the organization sent 30 units of blood to a Mount Carmel Health System hospital to help victims .

“In honor of the lives of those killed in the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District bus crash, I have directed that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio be flown at half-mast on all public buildings and grounds in Tuscarawas and Stark, at the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center and the Rhodes Tower, from sunrise on November 15, 2023 until sunset on November 18, 2023 ” wrote Governor Mike DeWine.

“All other public buildings and grounds in the state may fly the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at half-staff, at their discretion, during the same period,” he added.
