April Short: Mother of three arrested for killing toddler son so he could ‘be with Jesus and God’

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA: A Georgia mother of three was arrested last week after allegedly killing her infant son so he could “be with Jesus and God.” April Evalyn Short, 30, wife of a US Army staff sergeant, was taken into custody on Wednesday (November 15).

She has since been charged with one count of aggravated murder for the alleged crime that occurred during an act of child abuse, namely the murder of the little boy whose name has not been released by the authorities for reasons obvious reasons.

April Short’s husband received a text message that ‘worried’ him

According to Newsweek, on the day of the crime, Short sent her husband a text message around 8 a.m. that “worried” him about the well-being of their youngest child. The messages referred to God telling Short that “the days of darkness are upon us” and that “we [she and her husband] we would be together again.

The husband was reportedly on duty at the Fort Eisenhower military installation, located about 10 miles west of Augusta, Georgia, when he received the messages and immediately returned home. Upon arrival, the husband said Short barricaded herself in the master bedroom of their home with their three children, leading her husband to call the police. The couple’s two eldest children are aged 11 and 6.

When police arrived at 9:05 a.m., Short left the barricaded room with her two older children and then attempted to flee the scene in her car but stopped in the street outside her home when a police officer who was “partially in the car” pulled his gun on her.

Short’s husband immediately returned to the master bedroom when he realized their youngest child was not with Short and the children and “screamed.” Police followed and found the infant in the master bedroom bathroom “wrapped in plastic, with apparent injuries and bleeding from the neck.”

The victim was transported to the Military Medical Center where, around 9:34 a.m., he was tragically pronounced dead.

What did April Short’s six-year-old child tell investigators?

The six-year-old told investigators that his mother “had received two knives” and that she “was going to help him get [the victim] to God and Jesus. The child said his mother also told him “not to go in the bathroom because it could be very scary” before entering the bathroom with the victim and two knives.

When Short returned, she told the children she had “cut” the child so he “could be with Jesus and God,” according to the affidavit. She also allegedly threatened to “cut” the six-year-old girl “if she didn’t stop crying”.

April Short confessed to killing her child

Short also allegedly confessed to killing the victim during an interview with investigators.

“During the interview, Short provided details admitting to barricading the door to the master bedroom of the residence, surrounding [the victim] in a shower curtain in the bathtub of the bathroom connected to the master bedroom and attempted to use a knife to cut [the victim’s] neck,” the affidavit states.

“Short said the first knife didn’t work because it was dull, so Short used a second knife to cut. [the victim’s] neck.” Police said Short later admitted to knowing his actions were “wrong” and “wrong.”
