America’s Division Laid Bare as Internet Reacts to Austin Brawl Between Uniformed Marines and Civilians

AUSTIN, TEXAS: Video circulating on social media captures the incident when a fight broke out between a contingent of uniformed Marines and civilians outside a Texas nightclub on Sunday, November 19, 2023.

The video appears to show the groups involved in the altercation outside the Voodoo Room on Austin’s famous Sixth Street in the entertainment district.

How did the fight start?

The altercation appears to have started when a woman forcibly took a phone from another woman, prompting a Marine to step in to try to intervene.



Afterward, a man in a long-sleeved white shirt unsuccessfully attempted to punch another Marine, prompting several of his fellow service members to come to his defense.

As some Marines attempt to intervene and separate the individuals exchanging verbal insults, tensions rise, leading to a full-blown physical altercation.

As Austin police and Texas Highway Patrol officers worked to quell the unrest, citizens and Marines exchanged blows, resulting in some people being knocked to the ground.

Spectators applauded the Marines, who appeared to outnumber the civilians involved in the altercation.

In the video, at least one man is seen being arrested. The mounted police arrive near the end of the sequence, accompanied by loud sirens in the background.

This incident follows news in July of this year, when the Austin Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety reestablished their collaboration to increase police presence and deter illegal activity on the busy street downtown bars.

The DailyMail reported that the Austin Police Department did not respond to requests for additional information about the incident.

The city is a popular destination for young people as it is home to the University of Texas at Austin, ranked ninth in the nation and first in the state for public universities according to U.S. News & World Report.

Based on current migration patterns, the capital of Texas is expected to become one of the most populous cities in the United States by 2100.

Austin’s population is projected to increase more than tenfold, from 2.3 million to nearly 23 million by then.

A recent Bankrate survey reveals that Austin is the best city to start a career because of its thriving job market and high quality of life.

However, downtown Austin businesses told CBS Austin that increased violence and homelessness are impacting public safety.

While some people supported the Marines based on the viral images, the majority criticized the military’s seemingly inappropriate involvement in a situation they should not have found themselves in.
